Press Coverage of Chelmsford's Church at Car Boot Sale

Christians from eight Chelmsford churches have joined forces and raised £1500 for charity by selling hot drinks at the Boreham Car Boot Sale Christians from eight Chelmsford churches have joined forces and raised £1500 for charity by selling hot drinks at the Boreham Car Boot Sale.

Sunday 21st October saw the end of the 2012 season, and it was celebrated by handing a cheque for £1500 to facial disfigurement charity Changing Faces (www.changingfaces.org.uk). The team were overjoyed that in their second year they could more than double the £600 raised in 2011 for the Essex Air Ambulance and are all looking forward to returning in 2013.

Watch out, the local church is changing!

A team of Chelmsford Christians have raised £1500 for charity this year, by selling posh coffee at a series of car boot sales beside the A12 bypass.

They will be presenting the money to Changing Faces at the next boot sale, on Boreham farmland, on Sunday.

Media spokesman Christopher Smith said: "At our last boot sale we sold 170 hot drinks, a few sellers and buyers asked to be prayed for - and we have overtaken the £600 we raised last year for Essex Air Ambulance.

Our distinctive sign-written van is fitted with an expensive gourmet coffee machine, and staffed by Christians."

Mr Smith said The Church @ Car Boot Sale team would be returning next April to continue their "no pressure" approach to spreading the gospel.

Bargain hunters at a car boot sale helped Chelmsford Churches raise £600 for the Essex Air Ambulance.

Since May, volunteers from the Church at Car Boot Sale team have been raising money by selling coffee, tea and providing craft activities for children at the weekly Boreham car boot sale.

Christopher Smith, spokesman for the team, said: "The project has been a huge success. Hundreds of people have visited the tent and left with a positive experience of what church can mean."

Boot sale enthusiasts who religiously spend Sunday mornings trying to turn a profit or grabbing a bargain have been enjoying a taste of coffee heaven.

A group of believers from Chelmsford Churches opened the country's first Christian boot sale outreach at Boreham earlier this summer:

Thanks to a state-of-the-art Espresso Essential bean-to-cup coffee maker, the Church team has found that the aroma of freshly ground coffee, as well as tempting tea, is the perfect way to reach people who otherwise wouldn't go to Church.

Sales were so good that they donated £600 of their takings to the Essex Air Ambulance at the last event on Sunday.

The Church at Car Boot Sale project has been a huge success and since its inception hundreds of people have visited the tent and left with a positive experience of what Church can mean today. A team of volunteers have been providing top quality freshly ground coffee, cups of tea and a chance to relax for weary bargain hunters.

50 percent of the takings were given to the Essex Air Ambulance, who happily accepted a giant cheque for £600 on Sunday 9th October.

Bishop Stephen Cottrell interviewed by BBC Essex at Boreham Car Boot Sale The Bishop of Chelmsford, Stephen Cottrell, interviewed by BBC Essex

Bishop Stephen Cottrell was interviewed by BBC Essex in front of the Church at Car Boot Sale Gazebo at Boreham Car Boot Sale. The Bishop gave a lively interview stating that he was present to support this new venture, and that he believes that it is important for the Church to be present where the people are. He went on to say that there are many people who don't go to Church and who don't know a lot about the Christian faith and we are unlikely to engage with them by remaining in our Churches waiting for them to come to us.

Chelmsford's The Edge Magazine reporting on Church at Car Boot Sale Chelmsford's The Edge Magazine wrote this about us in their July 2011 edition...

Church @ Car Boot Sale

Now these people know how to go about spreading their faith. They sell cups of tea and coffee at Car Boot Sales (why The Edge was in attendance is a whole different story) and I was parched, so decided to buy a cup from the very nice folk.

"Forget about your image of traditional church," they say, "for we're all about church being relevant in the 21st century and we won't be pushing it onto anyone who doesn't want it. But if you do, we're on hand for a most civilised chat" ... over a cup of tea or coffee at a Sunday morning Boot Sale at that.

These people are Christians from a collection of Sunday churches and that's the way to go about spreading the gospel in The Edge's humble opinion ..... pretty low-key, like.
